Florida Discovery Overview

Polaroid - Ocean Drive

A tour that proves there is more to Florida than Miami and Disneyworld! A nice mix of beaches, nightlife and solitude. Laze on the sand. Snorkel. Party in Miami, Key West and Tampa, then savor a quiet drink in intriguing towns straight out of Old Florida’s past. Sleep on a remote island under the stars next to the ruins of an old fort and escape the world. Cross the Everglades and encounter a swampy, sub-tropical natural world that alligators and countless other species call home. With all this, there are still a few days set aside for visiting amusement parks and the famous Kennedy Space Center. A grand circle of a tour, in two weeks, there is no better way to do Florida! Spring 2013:  13 days / 14 nights

DAY 1:

North Miami Beach.

Arrival night in Miami Beach for hot sand, art deco architecture and house music! This is a city that feels like Latin America, not North America, and the first words you hear may be in Spanish.

DAY 2-3:

Key West.

Head down the beautiful overseas highway to Key West for two nights. Laid-back and ready for a party, Key West retains its own disheveled Caribbean charm. Watch sunset and street artists perform in Mallory Square. In daytime, snorkel at North America’s only living coral reef, rent a bike, or simply walk around the town that Hemmingway called home.

DAY 4-5:

Dry Tortugas National Park.

A highlight of this trip, board an early morning ferry from Key West to Dry Tortugas National Park on a remote island for an overnight of exploration! Armed with camping gear and plenty of water, enjoy a day of swimming or snorkelling in pristine waters. Sleep in the only campground under a starry sky and beside the ruins of an old fort. Tomorrow, a return ferry and journey back up the Keys.

DAY 6:

Everglades National Park.

Alligators and sawgrass… Cross Florida through the wetlands of the Everglades and remote Big Cypress National Preserve. This inhospitable country is home to the Miccosukee tribe of Seminole Indians.

DAY 7-8:

St. Petersburg area beaches / Tampa.

A quick visit to Sarasota, then laze on the beaches today near St. Petersburg. Taste the nightlife near the big city of Tampa, in the historic cigar manufacturing district known as Ybor City. Wash off the sand and get ready to go all night! On our second day, spend the day exploring St. Petersburg and the nearby beach communities such as historic Greek sponge fishing port of Tarpon Springs.

DAY 9:

Crystal River / Apalachicola.

Wake up early for a morning swim with the manatees (included activity!) Crystal River is the winter home of these shy, ugly, and endangered creatures, and we’ve been sleeping on their doorstep. Later, head to the small town of Apalachicola. This is a taste of Old Florida, the way Key West must have felt when Hemmingway lived there! Preserved by its location on a bay instead of a beach, Apalachicola retains a thriving commercial oyster and shrimp fleet, and is full of atmospheric Victorian architecture.

DAY 10:

Apalachicola River / St. Augustine.

Take a morning boat tour on the Apalachicola River (included activity!) The Apalachicola River is unique in Florida, the only major waterway virtually untouched by modern development. The river’s delta with its maze of creeks, sloughs and swamps is still the same watery wilderness that Indians knew centuries ago. Afterwards, re-cross Florida to one of the oldest towns in the Americas—St. Augustine, founded in 1565 by the Spanish.

DAY 11:

Kennedy Space Center / Coco Beach.

Visit Kennedy Space Center (optional) for launch site tours, shows, exhibits, and a chance to see one of the original Saturn V rockets from the Apollo moon missions. You may also opt to spend the day at nearby Coco Beach for a day of sunbathing, before we drive to Orlando for the first of three nights.

DAY 12-13:

Orlando.

Disneyworld, Sea World, Universal Studios, tacky souvenir shops and outlet malls! Put on the map when Disney carved its fiefdom out of virgin swampland in the early 1970s, Orlando lives and breathes theme parks. With two full days here, embrace the wonder of a theme park or two (optional activities) where everyone is a tourist!

DAY 14:

South Miami Beach.

Hit Fort Lauderdale Beach on our return to Miami. Celebrate our last night in South Beach!
